C’est la vie!

Or to put it in my native tongue:  That’s life!

No matter what language one expresses it in, the above expression speaks to a simple truth:  Life is unpredictable.  But it goes on.

This is why the Scriptures remind us that while God “causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:45) still, while “the righteous person may have many troubles,… the Lord delivers him from them all.” (Psalm 34:19)

And so, in the face of hardship, we can say, ‘That’s life” not with a defeated spirit resigned to the idea that evil will prevail, but rather with an understanding that the righteous will overcome with the help of Jesus Christ.  This is exceedingly Good News!  Because in a fallen world, we all experience more than our share of hardship.

Life can be tough!

With that in mind, let’s keep some things in perspective.  Satan wants you believing that your troubles are so unique to you that whatever hope you may have is not worth hanging  onto.  After all, he would tell you, you are hopeless!  That’s why you have trouble!  But see this is a lie!

You have trouble because all of creation was marred in the fall.  Sin and hardship and chaos entered into creation way back in the day of Adam and Eve.  It’s in the world.

And it’s in your heart.  But thanks be to God, his redemptive plan for the world is a plan that works from the inside out.  God’s plan to change the world begins with changing hearts one at a time.  God desires that all would place their faith in Jesus, trusting that our salvation was purchased by the offering of His life for our sin.  And when we make this turn from sin, towards Jesus, something miraculous happens.

The God who created the universe, and who fills the very universe, takes up residence in our hearts by His Spirit.  And his Spirit enables us to live godly lives as we yield to His leading.

Now let’s understand something:  This indwelling Holy Spirit does not free us from the trials of life.  But He does enable us to live in such a way that we can soar above the struggles that threaten to wring the joy out of our lives.

Do we have trials?  “Yes we do!”  But C’est la vie - That’s life!  It’s unpredictable.  It’s messy.  And one day, it will end.  And on that day, a whole new life will begin!  C’est la vie indeed.  And what a promise!  Eternal life in the presence of Jesus.  It is our joy.  It is our hope.  It is our Lord.

If you are in Christ, that is life indeed!!!
